A vision for a multi-generational community of professionals, with an affinity for the intellectual stimulation of university life, will be realized with the construction of a new building at 303 Third Street in Cambridge.
University Residential Communities (“URC”) will establish a co-operative form of ownership. This will allow members of the co-op the opportunity to maintain this residence as a continuing financially accessible resource for faculty, staff, employees, alumni and others affiliated with MIT, Harvard, or MGH.
Emphasis was placed on developing a residential community that would appeal to people who share an interest in the intellectual, cultural and social life in the Boston/Cambridge area. An important idea promoted by URC, is the design of the homes and amenities will enable residents to age gracefully and prosper professionally in the comfort of a collegial community of neighbors with shared interests. The location of the residence was of utmost importance to URC and many factors ultimately led to the selection of 303 Third Street. The fact that the site is within easy walking distance of MIT, a scenic walk over the Longfellow Bridge to MGH, less than a five minute walk to the Kendall Square red line T stop, (two stops to Harvard, one to MGH) made the selection an easy one. New retail outlets are being promoted along Third Street and a new five acre Park is planned by the City of Cambridge on Fifth Street. The Constellation Center, a dynamic performance center which will feature music and film venues of extraordinary technical quality, is in the planning stages adjacent to the site on the Third Street side.
University Residential Communities will have 168 homes with over 50 floor plans. The homes range in size from a one bedroom unit with home office with approximately 750 square feet to a three bedroom unit with over 2000 square feet. Underground garage parking will be included with every home, and guest parking will be provided. On the lobby level a concierge service will be available to arrange special access to cultural, medical housekeeping and transportation needs on a 24 hour basis, and it is anticipated that the MIT shuttle bus will have a stop at the front door. In the common areas residents will have access to a private dining club, a library/lounge room, a media/screening room, a fitness facility, a swimming pool with locker room, open garden courtyard, and medical exam office.
Many meetings with URC/Beal and the architect and developer and much thought, planning and re-design has resulted in homes with superior finishes and functional layouts.
